Going Green? Read this…

I’m currently reading a few different books, one of which is Gorgeously Green by Sophie Uliano. It’s a great guide for how to “green” your life, covering topics such as beauty products, home, fitness, style, food, travel, and gardening.

What I really like about the book is that she gives real examples of products (clothes, cleaners, etc) that are considered good for you as well as good for the planet. Including the actual names (and websites) makes going green so much easier! For example, in the chapter about beauty products, she lists several ingredients that you want to avoid. I’m not going to list all of them since that would not be cool, but here are a few she lists that actually come from the Environmental Working Group:

1. Coal Tar – used in dandruff shampoo and anti-itch creams. Is a known carcinogen. Listed as FD&C Blue (used in toothpaste) and FD&C Green 3 (used in mouthwash).

2. Fragrance – an ambiguous term used to mask other ingredients such as phthaltes, which disrupt the endocrine system causing reproductive and developmental harm.

3. Triclosan – used in nearly all antibacterial products. Is often contaminated with dioxins, which are highly carcinogenic and can weaken the immune system, decrease fertility, and cause birth defects.

When I read this kind of thing, it all makes sense why there seems to be so many people with cancer, infertility, birth defects, allergies, etc.

The list goes on. Check the the Environmental Working Group website. Also, get the book Gorgeously Green, because once you learn all about these nasty ingredients, you’ll want to know what you CAN buy that doesn’t include them.
