Why Buy Hummus? Make Homemade!

I decided today to make hummus, and once it was done I wondered why I ever buy it at the store. First of all, it’s soooooo easy. You probably have many of the ingredients already in your kitchen. Second, it tastes so much better. Here’s the recipe I used:

Hummus
From The Real Food Daily Cookbook by Ann Gentry

Ingredients
3.5 cups canned garbanzo beans, drained with some liquid reserved
1/3 cup roasted tahini (I used regular tahini since that’s what I have on hand)
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 3 lemons)
3 T extra virgin olive oil
1 t minced garlic
1.5 t sea salt
1/4 t freshly ground pepper
1/8 t cayenne pepper

Directions
Combine the beans, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic in a food processor. Blend until smooth, adding enough reserved liquid to form a creamy consistency. Blend in the salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Eat on toasted pita wedges, fresh broccoli, raw carrots, etc. I slathered some onto some whole grain, high-fiber bread and topped it with a slice of pepper jack cheese and felt completely satisfied 🙂
