Yoga IS for Athletes – Just Ask LeBron James!

Cleveland.com reported today that LeBron James, a star basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, does yoga!

Serious athletes often ask me about how yoga might benefit them. Many of these athletes don’t really see the value of adding yoga to their already busy workout schedule. “Would I be wasting my time taking a yoga class?,” they ask.

Yoga is PERFECT for athletes in so many ways. Here are just a few:

  • Many athletes develop stiff muscles from repetitive movements – yoga helps to bring the body back into balance by building flexibility so that muscles can move more freely and thus making you less susceptible to injuries. James said. “I had some lower back problems a few years ago, and once I started to do the yoga, it has helped them go away for now.”
  • A vigorous vinyasa yoga practice can increase your oxygen capacity and help maximize blood flow to the muscles, which improves overall efficiency.
  • Yoga teaches you how to maintain your focus during an intense situation. “Yoga isn’t just about the body, it’s also about the mind, and it’s a technique that has really helped me,” James said. “You do have to focus because there’s some positions that can really hurt you at times if you aren’t focused and breathing right.”
  • Vigorous exercise produces endorphins – a natural “high” that makes you less likely to notice the onset of pain and injury. Yoga helps to develop “body intuition” so that you are better able to listen and respond to your body.
